Fire Mountain Trails

Cherokee, North Carolina

Fire Mountain Trails is a newly created multi-use trail system located in Cherokee, North Carolina. The trail system is located adjacent to the existing Oconaluftee Indian Village and the Mountainside Theatre. Johnson Architecture has been working with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to develop a cohesive master plan that creates an iconic trailhead for the increased traffic that this new development has generated. As part of the overall master plan, JAI has designed a new Trailhead Station that will provide a needed rest area and supply depot for hikers, bikers and visitors of all kinds.

Strategically positioned at a midpoint in the existing parking area on a steeply sloping site, the Trailhead Station will provide an upper accessible entry and a lower-level entry accessible with stairs. A concession area, restrooms, bike wash station and bike repair station all will be included. The main feature will be a balcony overlook with chairs and fire pits that are focused on views to the south of Spray Ridge and beyond. A simple, single slope roof, board-formed concrete and a colorful, local native-painted mural will make the Trailhead Station a structure that can’t be missed.

JAI is working with 4D Engineering from Lexington, South Carolina, and Arcadis IBI Group of Knoxville on the implementation of this exciting new project.
