As Director of Administration at Johnson Architecture, Inc., Heather Overton plays a pivotal role in ensuring the firm runs with precision and a people-first mindset. Overseeing business operations, human resources and accounting for a talented team of architects and designers, she focuses on streamlining processes so her colleagues can devote more time to their craft.
“In the past six years, we’ve redesigned our billing and payables processes, reducing approval delays and eliminating redundancies,” Overton explains. “That allows our staff to focus on what they do best, delivering exceptional work for our clients.” Her approach combines operational efficiency with a genuine care for the team’s well-being, making sure employees feel supported and clients feel prioritized.
Overton’s career has been shaped by meaningful mentorship, particularly from Daryl Johnson, founder of Johnson Architecture. She credits him with showing her what true leadership looks like. “Daryl built this firm from his basement into a thriving business of 24 people. He’s weathered challenges with resilience and grace, and his humility is unmatched. No matter who’s in the room, he makes people feel seen and valued,” she says. From him, Overton learned the power of quiet leadership, loyalty and staying grounded, principles she applies daily.
For Overton, leadership means being the person people count on, whether for clarity in a process or support during a challenge. At Johnson Architecture, she’s known as “the glue,” the steady presence who connects people and champions the firm’s culture. She strives to empower others, ensuring that each person has the resources and encouragement to succeed.
Beyond the office, Overton brings that same ethos to her community involvement. She seeks opportunities to contribute to local causes and initiatives, always with the goal of leaving things better than she found them. Whether in business or civic life, her guiding principle is simple: add value, lead with empathy and stay true to your commitments. In an industry where the spotlight often shines on the finished product, Overton’s work ensures the structure behind the scenes is just as strong. Her leadership doesn’t just hold things together, it creates the foundation for people to thrive. She and her husband, Brad, share one son, Cole, and three dogs, Lilly, Rizzy, and Peaches.
