Knox.biz: If new projects are any indication, could Gay Street be ready for a second renaissance?

South Gay Street is all grown up — quite literally. While most people are familiar with the street-level shops and restaurants, not much is known about the upper levels of the historic downtown buildings unless you live there.

That’s right: The upper floors in the street’s core blocks are nearly filled with residences. Even the areas where people are not living could soon accommodate downtown dwellers, thanks to a handful of redevelopment projects in the works.

But just because South Gay Street is nearly filled in does not mean its current state will be its permanent one, as underground concepts and high-level architecture recently implemented downtown could indicate where Gay Street is going.
